Principal's Welcome Message

Dear Aviara Oaks Elementary School Students & Families:

Welcome to the 2009-2010 school year at Aviara Oaks Elementary School. Together we will usher in a new decade while concentrating on student success and building on our positive school climate.

Although our STAR results have not yet been released, I am confident that our scores will reflect the hard work and preparations of the students, teachers, and families of AOE. The State budget has not been completed at this time, however there are indications that Basic Aide Districts, like Carlsbad, will be financially impacted.

Dr. Roach’s team, including the Administrative Cabinet and the Board, has been working on plans to meet the potential $6.5 million deficit for the coming school year. The major impact this newest challenge will have on elementary schools, (AOE included), will be the increase of class size in grades 1 – 3 to between 23 and 25 students per class.

Thankfully, the AOE community, parent volunteers, the PTA, and FAME work incredibly hard to support our teachers and students. Students will continue to benefit from Science Lab Instruction, PE in grades 1 – 5, and Kinder Karate which are programs funded %100 by the PTA. We will also have the Instructional Technology Resource Teacher for GATE support during first semester funded by our foundation, Friends of Aviara Middle and Elementary Schools, F.A.M.E.. Grants through FAME will also allow us to build on our SMART board investment to increase student access to technology based instruction. SMART Boards are currently in Kinder, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classes. Training and implementation in 1st and 2nd grades are on the horizon. New this year will be the funding of 45 minutes each week of Music instruction per class through CCMA via the Carlsbad Education Foundation.

Our school-wide goals this year include the implementation of the math curriculum via the newly adopted Math series, enVision. The instructional strategies will focus on better meeting the needs of our Gifted students through professional development and lesson design as well as to build on the 6Traits Writing Program grades K-5. Finally, our climate goal is to increase the use by staff and parents of the School Loop AOE website. Weekly newsletters will be posted by the teachers on School Loop as well as information regarding homework, class projects, and upcoming events.

The Aviara Oaks Elementary School staff and I are looking forward to the 2009-2010 school year. Please mark your calendars for September 1st at 4pm to meet your new teacher, join the PTA, and reconnect with your AOE friends.

Very Truly Yours,

Kimberly Ann Huesing
