ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL:
Playground supervision begins 15 minutes before the start of school. Please do not allow your students to arrive at school before this time unless they are eating breakfast at school or attend the Kids Care Program.

It is imperative that you make every effort to arrive and depart school on time. If your student is tardy they must report to the office for a tardy slip. If they do not check into the office, they will be marked absent and the office staff will have to invest time trying to update their records accurately. Remember, it is difficult to effectively conduct instruction when students are rushed or late.

Please remember to calendar our minimum day schedules on Thursdays and parent/teacher conference days. If your child is without a ride, he/she should go to the office to call home. Please review our office hours with your children, making sure that they know where we are located. The office closes at 3:30 p.m. each day – children left behind beyond those hours have no access to the phone or supervision. If an emergency arises, please contact the office for assistance.

Also, review “after school” plans with your children so that they know what to expect at the day’s end. We frequently have a large number of children needing to contact home after school because they are unsure of their arrangements. The better the planning from home, the less confusion the children experience each day.

BELL SCHEDULE:
The daily periods can be found on the bell schedule by clicking here.

TRAFFIC:
Remember that traffic is most congested during the first few days of school. Parking your car on Ambrosia and walking to the campus is strongly recommended. Please abide by all posted parking restrictions. We do have an officer on campus who will ticket vehicles left in unauthorized areas. To facilitate the flow of traffic after school:
1) Look for your child in the designated location as specified in the Traffic Plan
2) do not block the lane by arriving early
3) give students time to arrive at their designated location. Our traffic flow has improved tremendously in recent years. As long as everyone sticks to the Traffic Plan, it is quite effective at both arrival and dismissal periods.
Thank you for continuing to be patient and cooperative with one another.

NEW STUDENTS:
The office is now open and will be accepting registration for all grade levels. Call (760) 331-6000 for office hours. For kindergarten parents, be sure you have a copy of your child's birth certificate and up-to-date immunization records. For kindergarten, your child must be five on or before December 2nd – there are no exceptions to this state age requirement. While you may request morning or afternoon slots, due to budget and space constraints, we cannot assure placement in specified slots or, possibly, even on our campus. Other than mandated medical emergencies, class placement is at the discretion of the school.

CLASSROOM ASSIGNMENTS:
Full class size reduction is maintained in the 1st through 3rd grades with enrollment limited to 20 students per class. In kindergarten, partial class reduction is maintained with 31 students in each class and two teachers for a period of 100 minutes per day. In the fourth and fifth grades, an average of 32 students per class are enrolled. Classroom assignments will be posted on Tuesday, August 26th, 2008 after 4:00 p.m. in the auditorium window. Due to anticipated changes in enrollment, there will be no classroom changes during the first two weeks of school.

Occasionally, students become apprehensive when they are not enrolled in the same class as their friends or are unfamiliar with the teacher to whom they’ve been assigned. Please reassure your child that all of our teachers are committed to the success of their students and they will help students get to know one another and develop new friendships once the school year begins. Children readily adapt to change when they are supported by their parents and teachers. We do not accept requests for specific teachers other than mandated medical emergencies. Class placement is at the discretion of the school.

COMBINATION CLASSES:
With Aviara Oaks' ever-changing student population, forming new classes at the beginning of each school year becomes a challenge. Students continue to enroll just before and even after class lists are posted, which often requires classes to be changed and new classes created after the beginning of the school year. The number of classes formed at each grade level is determined by the total number of students in each grade. Consequently, there is a need for combination classes - two grade levels of students within one classroom setting. I have been asked numerous questions about combination classes, how students are selected for combination classes and how these classes are structured so that both groups of students within a combination class receive grade level appropriate instruction.

The academic differences of students at any grade level typically ranges from those achieving far below grade level to those achieving well above grade level. This wide range of abilities means that in a straight grade class teachers are providing instruction at a variety of levels. In combination classes, this wide range of abilities is significantly narrowed, allowing the teacher to focus on the instructional needs at only two levels - that of the higher and that of the lower grade of students within the combination class. Students at both the higher and lower grades who meet the following guidelines may be recommended for placement in combination classes based on space available:

Independent, responsible learners
High functioning, at or above grade level (both grades)
Not receiving special services or exhibiting severe behavior or attention problems that interfere with learning

Experienced teachers are assigned to teach combination classes and are very capable of providing grade level appropriate instruction in all subjects at two grade levels within the same classroom. However, due to time constraints during the school day, students from one of the grade levels in the combination class go to a straight grade class for science and social studies to ensure that academic standards are met at each grade level. Equally important are the social experiences of our students.

Therefore, whenever combination classes are formed, recesses and lunches are scheduled so that students in combination classes have an opportunity to interact with others from their respective grade levels. Additionally, every student participates in grade level field trips and/or social events.
Combination classes have existed at AOES and other schools around the district for many years. Our combination classes are not only necessary but successful, providing students in those classes with an excellent learning environment.

STUDENT HANDBOOKS:
Each student receives an elementary school Student Handbook. Please review this handbook and the Standards for Student Behavior with your child. Clothing should be “school appropriate” and should no way detract from the educational climate at the school or jeopardize the safety of our students while on campus. For safety reasons, shoes with closed toes and heels should be worn at all times. Hair styles should also be “tasteful” and not distracting to the environment conducive to learning. Bare midriffs, exposed undergarments, clothes containing offensive language/signs, cosmetics, and hairstyles or hair color that disrupts the learning environment are not appropriate for school. The determination of the afore-mentioned is at the discretion of your child’s teacher and principal.

BREAKFAST/LUNCH MENU:
Breakfast and Lunch menus are directed by CUSD Food Services Department. The breakfast and lunch menu is available on the CUSD website at http://www.carlsbadusd.k12.ca.us/menus.html.

FREE AND REDUCED BREAKFAST/LUNCH PROGRAM:
Application information for this program will be sent home with your child during the first week of school. The cost of reduced breakfast is 30 cents and lunch is 40 cents. If you were approved for the program last year, you will be enrolled through the end of September but must reapply for the new school year. The regular cost of breakfast is $1.50 and lunch is $2.75. Milk is 50 cents and juice is 75 cents. It is very helpful to review your child’s cafeteria number with them for the first few weeks of school.

EMERGENCY CARD UPDATE:
New emergency cards will be sent home the first few days of school for you to complete. It is imperative that these be returned immediately, so that we have your most current emergency contact information. Please keep the school informed of any changes that occur during the year by contacting the office. PLEASE make sure to let us know if your cell phone numbers change! The more contacts you list, the better

KIDS CARE PROGRAM:
A before and after school child care program is available again this year on campus. You may contact the Kids Care office for information at 760-730-9200. This program is sponsered by the Carlsbad Educational Foundation.

STUDENTS LEAVING SCHOOL EARLY:
If, for any reason, you wish to pick up your child before the end of the school day, please first come to the office and sign him/her out of school (make sure to bring your I.D.). The office will contact the teacher. A note sent with your child is helpful to let the teacher know he/she will be leaving early. If someone other than yourself will be picking up your child early, that person must be listed on the contact information of your child’s emergency card. If not, a note must be sent to the office prior to that time. Again, this person must have their picture ID with them. We will never release a child via a “pre-pick-up phone call”. Safety over convenience. Again, this is for the safety of your child, your cooperation is essential.

VOLUNTEER INFORMATION:
All volunteers must check in with the office each time on campus to volunteer. The CUSD Board of Trustees approved a policy regulating volunteers in school district classrooms in 1994. The policy states that persons who volunteer in classrooms on a regular basis must have a copy of a tuberculosis (TB) test on file in the school office. In addition, volunteers must have a Volunteer Information Form (available in the office) on file, which will be submitted to the Board of Trustees for approval. Both of the afore-mentioned procedures will serve as a protection for our students and volunteers in Carlsbad Schools.

VISITING SCHOOL:
In order to maintain student safety, it is important that all visitors to school, including parents and volunteers, check in with office personnel. Volunteer and visitor badges will be issued. All persons on campus before the dismissal bell will need to follow these procedures. The maintenance of a safe campus is paramount. Your cooperation assists us in this endeavor. Children should not be called from class to “visit”. If you have a need to speak with your child for anything other than an emergency, please come to see them during recess or lunch, not during valuable teaching time.

FORGOTTEN ITEMS:
If your child has forgotten their lunch, homework, umbrella, jacket, etc., please do not go directly to the classroom as this causes a disruption to the learning process. Drop the item off at the office, and we will contact the student to come when it is convenient. Please tell your children to check in the office at recess for forgotten items, this limits classroom interruptions.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES:
The school will provide basic supplies such as paper, pencils, erasers and crayons. Teachers requesting additional supplies to be donated to the class will send a list home with the students. Donations of Kleenex are always appreciated.

ROLLING BACKPACKS:
Teachers have asked that kindergarten and first grade students not bring rolling backpacks to school as they have been difficult to manage when walking in line. These students will not be given any heavy items to carry home, therefore, a non-rolling backpack will be sufficient.

SKATEBOARDS, SCOOTERS AND ROLLERBLADES:
In accordance with city ordinance 10.58.015, skateboards, scooters and rollerblades are not allowed on campus at any time. Should these items be brought to school, they will be confiscated and kept until the end of the year. There will be no exceptions to this rule.

PICTURE DAY:
Picture Day will be September 17th, 2008. Make-up day is September 22, 2008.

ATTENDANCE:
Attendance is a vital part of an education. Please send your child to school unless there is a family emergency or he/she is ill. When absent, you should call the attendance line at 331-6070, to report the absence. All absences that are not called in will be marked as “unexcused”. If your child is out for more than 3 days, the school may require a note from your doctor before he/she returns to school. When a child accumulates 3 or more unexcused absences, you should anticipate receiving a “truancy notification.” If your child is diagnosed with a communicable illness (strep, lice, etc.), please contact the school so that we can notify the class. Please familiarize yourselves with CUSD policy on excessive absences.

With the planning of family events and trips, please be reminded of the following attendance information. Excused Absences:
· Personal illness
· Medical/dental appointments
· Attendance of funeral services for a member of immediate family
· Court appearances
· Participation in religious instruction
· Observance of a religious holiday

Students absent due to illness are excused from school. Although the school does not receive funding when a student misses school due to illness, students are encouraged to stay home until ready to return to school however, at the discretion of the school, a note may be required from a physician after 3 days.
When a child is absent, not only is valuable instructional time lost, but there is also a strong financial impact to the school. Schools do not receive funding for students who are absent, whether the absence is excused or unexcused. For example, on the day before a holiday, 75 absences were reported resulting in a loss of approximately $1800 for one school day – prompting a district-wide calendar change.

Students missing school for unexcused reasons will not be given work in advance and may receive an incomplete or failing grade for missed assignments, tests, projects, etc. Additionally, Board Policy provides that total absences (excused and/or unexcused) exceeding eighteen (18) days per school year may be sufficient reason to require a K-8 student to repeat a grade level program. Consequently, parents are requested to plan family trips when school is not in session.

HISTORY:

Aviara Oaks Elementary School first opened its doors in September 1990 with 350 kindergarten - sixth grade students and 11 teachers. Over the years enrollment increased, and in 1999, the school expanded into a kindergarten - eighth grade school with nearly 1200 students. The following year, Aviara Oaks reestablished itself as two separate schools - Aviara Oaks Elementary (K-5) and Aviara Oaks Middle (6-8). Currently, AOE School has 730 students, 1 Administrator, 33 teachers, and 21 support personnel including health, technology, office, cafeteria, custodial and library staff, all of whom are dedicated to maintaining Aviara Oaks School's standard of excellence.

The 19-acre elementary school campus is located in the southern-most part of the city of Carlsbad. The facilities are situated in a park-like setting with well-manicured lawns and plenty of open spaces between classrooms, allowing ample room for playgrounds and athletic fields. The campus contains 37 general education classrooms and one special education classroom, two computer labs, an auditorium, a cafeteria, a library, a health office and administrative offices. The elementary campus is adjacent to the Aviara Oaks Middle School campus, with the AOES administrative complex separating the two schools.

The Aviara Oaks School community includes a variety of housing developments: single family homes, apartments, affordable housing, and town homes. Many families choose to live in the Aviara Oaks attendance area due to the school's reputation for high academic excellence.
